5 pointsCHEMUNG COUNTY - Local author Chris Sherwood is pleased to announce that his newest novel, In Times of Trouble: Crossroads, will be released on November 12, 2024. This latest book is the third and final in a post-apocalyptic trilogy. The story follows the people of Hammond’s Corners as they struggle to survive a cataclysmic event that leaves the United States without modern conveniences such as electricity and automobiles. And while it may be hard to imagine living in such circumstances, the stories take place in a fictional world many Chemung County residents may recognize. “When it came time to create this world, it seemed only natural to use a place I’m most familiar with,” Sherwood said. “Many locations throughout the book are inspired by actual places here in Chemung County. However, I did take some creative license, particularly when it came to distances and names. Even then, many of the towns are identified in the book by their historical names.” A fan of post-apocalyptic fiction himself, Chris says that ideas for the story came to him in 2016 while walking the family’s dog. “I was reading some great books at the time, stuff by William Forstchen and G. Michael Hopf, to name a couple. And while the dog and I were walking, I’d get to thinking, ‘What if that happened here?’ My imagination kicked in, and a story began to take shape. A couple of friends encouraged me to start writing them down, and the next thing I know, I’m creating this new world with a whole cast of characters. It was kinda crazy.” But it wasn’t until 2020 that he decided to publish it. “So COVID came along, and like many others, I had more spare time on my hands. So I dug it out and decided to put it out there for the world to see.” The book was met with positive reviews from readers. “To say I was nervous releasing it would be an understatement. But the feedback from readers was overwhelmingly positive. I received messages from people I hadn’t seen in years telling me they read and loved the book. It meant so much to me.” Spurred on by readers and the fact he’d already added a sneak preview that hinted at a sequel, Chris immediately began working on the follow-up, In Times of Trouble: Aftermath, which he released in 2022. “I’d kind of painted myself into a corner, so to speak,” he says, laughing. “I had added that little thing at the end, teasing a sequel, with no clue what would happen.” The second book ended in a way that could either be the final end or leave room for Sherwood to write more. “I pretended I wasn’t sure there’d be a third, but the truth was I knew there would be. I’d already imagined the ending of it; I just needed to come up with a story to get there.” Chris says he knew the third book could perhaps be more difficult and take longer to write, but there were times he wasn’t sure it would happen. “This one definitely fought me,” he says. “And I had already told myself this would be the last one. So I needed to come up with a story that left not only the reader satisfied but myself as well. So I was more than a little worried about whether it would work or not.” According to Chris, the beta-reader response let him know he had nothing to worry about. “The first one told me, ‘You did it!’ and then when the other two got back to me with similar responses, I thought, ’Holy ( expletive deleted), apparently I did!’” Sherwood says that once the new book is available, he plans to focus more on marketing and attracting new readers. That includes some promotional sales on all three titles that will be announced on his Facebook page and website. As for his next writing project? “Right now, I’m taking a little break to focus on getting these books into peoples’ hands. But I do have some ideas in a notebook, including some short stories, so we’ll see.” For more information or to order the In Times of Trouble trilogy, simply CLICK HERE

4 pointsI’m dying. After Biden’s comments calling Trump supporters “garbage,” Trump showed up to an event in a garbage truck today. Yes, this actually happened. 🤣🤣🤣

3 pointsThanks for digging into these details more. It seems like the City is leaving some leeway. Although, I still think, as long as any property is in compliance with taxes and codes, it really isn't part of the "blight" that needs to be addressed the.....and is none of the City's business whether it's occupied or not. There may be any number of reasons why it's unoccupied. Maybe they have high standards and require background or credit checks (that are fully within their legal right). But have difficulty finding tenants who meet the requirements. Or perhaps listing at a price point that's above what the current market is willing to pay for their location. It's their choice to hold out for the amount they want. If they're keeping it clean, maintained and paying taxes, it's overreach for the City to demand justification for it being unoccupied.

3 pointsI have been room scrolling on Tik Tok all day since I am off. Some people are even more hilarious than they were after Hillary lost in 2016. One of the best jokes I heard was. They never accused Trump of the one thing he actually does. He beats women! ,😂

3 pointsto each their own, but sadly given the political machines on both sides, everyone's vote is wasted in the duopoly dems/reps hold, then add in electoral college and super delegates.... local elections are about the only arena where each vote truly matters and even then, theres a few chuckle-heads in the area styling themselves after washington, to continue on the gummint pay roll
-
3 pointsIn a swing state like PA or WI, a "protest" write-in vote may affect the outcome. But in NY, there's no measurable chance of Harris not receiving all of our electoral votes. So sending a clear message of voters' disappointment in both choices is a very reasonable approach.

3 pointsIt is, actually, if you take the blinders off for a moment. What you want is to open a can of worms that is far bigger than getting a check in the mail. Who pays for it, and where do you think that money is coming from? If someone wants to write a check to assuage their “white guilt,” they can feel free to do so. I have no intention of doing so.

3 pointsSo... my wedding gown, now 50 years and 1 day old LOL, that I made on my own ca. 1900 treadle machine, is a genuine antique! It's in the photo from our 40th anniversary as header for today's 50th Anniversary Poetic Devotions' blog. Never had it professionally cleaned, able to wear it on every 5th or 10th year anniversary, still looking like it did the day I finished making it and the veil a lifetime ago!

3 pointsI agree. Specific to this topic, it's implied that John Kelly's military distinction should confer some measure of "honor" and lend credibility to his claims. Instead, it should raise the question of how "honorable" it was for him to happily withhold knowledge of such egregious behavior (and only disclose it years later in the form of a lucrative book deal).

3 pointsPeople, just to clarify; you are supposed to escape FROM prison, not to break BACK IN. Wrong direction.

3 pointsWhen my daughter went to the University of South Dakota, they had Lakota as a foreign language there. So in regions where the indigenous live, I do think they are creating pathways to keep their language alive.
-
3 pointsThen they have the right to figure out a way to pay for them. All that "free" money you think we should be giving away comes from somewhere, and a lot of us are tired of paying for it.

2 pointsI've been keeping the news on in the background for the past few days and I've been hearing a lot of "democrats have to re-evaluate their message" and similar statements. Thing is, it's the same stuff they said in 2016 after Trump won. They obviously didn't get the message, rather, they doubled down on the things that the average American isn't concerned about and overlooked the obvious. And they won't learn a lesson from this at all, you mark my words.

2 pointsIt doesn't say every unit has to be occupied, just that the property has to be occupied. So if it's partially occupied and property is maintained its probably OK. Plus, the way I read that, there always has been a vacant fee schedule.

2 pointsso lets pay the folks who CANT afford to have children in the first place, to squirt out more? its NOT a one time payment, the initial 1800 is just the down payment for the next 18 years of that child/family depending on taxpayers being squeezed more

2 pointsRight, not to penalize and punish generations to come for something that happened hundreds of years ago. Which is detrimental to any efforts to move forward.

2 pointsI have a problem with this. What was done to the Aftrican Americans was awful, but what happened to the Native Americans, Irish, Catholics, Italians, was just as bad. The KKK believed in the National White Protestant Nation. I personally think the Native Americans got the worst deal. They were kind and helped the people assimilate to this land...They believed the land was for everyone to use. We stole it from them piece by piece...If it wasn't for their kindness, the Europeans would not have created sustainable colonies here. How did we repay their kindness? Just sad. No money can correct the discrimination and white entitlement that was the formation of the United States. All we can do is what we are doing now. Give all US citizens the right to the best education through grade 12. Give all US citizens the right to attend a college for further education. Each generation is a little less prejudiced than the one before. We currently are not treating all people equal, but it isn't as bad as Archie Bunker either..The discontinuance of redlining is making it easy for Americans to live anywhere.

2 pointsIm not convinced that it won't come down to what/if either candidate releases a more compelling statement than the other about the squirrel by Tuesday.

2 pointsWhy bother wasting the money on research? As a black person do you feel you deserve the money for something that happened 150ish years ago?
-
2 pointsBecause I don't agree with punitive actions against people who had no part in the problem.

2 pointsor you( general sense) work as much/long as possible, or for-go things like internet, smoking/drinking/whatever, to make sure YOUR child has what they need. Your kid is only poor if you fail in your responsibilities as a parent. ideally the way to fix that is for everyone of us to quit electing people based upon which "team" or color they play for and get folks in office that will actually ensure people over profit is the way business and governance is done.

2 pointsAnyone sitting around in Oct 2024 who is considering voting for Trump has already heard these claims. And after being bombarded with “Orange Man Bad” messaging for several years, they’re no longer listening to even notice any new new or expanded allegations. Yep. And, for quite some time, we’ve also been told “see something, say something”. Experts and authority figures on all matters have lectured us that staying silent is practically the same thing as participating (from “me too” or misogyny to antisemitism and suspicious signs of ‘domestic terrorism’). So there’s a fair argument that if the danger existed and was witnessed as far back as 2019 or earlier, then no honorable or credible accuser would continue working for a murderously despotic tyrant and just let unspeakable behavior slide for years.

2 pointsbarring reading every line of the law, my biggest issue is the protections based upon "gender identity" and "gender expression". All too many times when topic of gender is discussed, the "experts" and proponents say that gender is fluid. The Law is supposed to be black and white as well as blind, so what would stop anyone from using said fluidity to express whatever gender suits their cause at any given moment? as to repro issues....lets face it, its just a nicer way to introduce abortion; i truly think that if the person is paying cash, or private insurance covers it, it is no ones business, especially the State what they do. If on the other hand, it is to be covered through any form of public monies, then the whole "my body, my choice" will need to be tempered by rules of the State in which taxpayers are providing the funding

2 pointsThe backpack program sends home meals every weekend for children that qualify for free lunch...I teach in a school where everyone gets a free lunch because so many qualify, but only the ones that qualify and the parents say yes they'd like it, have the back pack of food sent home. It has extra food for long weekends (like this weekend) and vacation weeks. During the summer, school parks have free lunches for anyone interested in stopping by...

2 pointshttp://SpaceX wants to go to Mars. To get there, environmentalists say it’s trashing Texas https://www.npr.org/2024/10/10/nx-s1-5145776/spacex-texas-wetlands Who watched the movie 'Erin Brockovich'? Do you remember "hexavalent chromium"? Seems like we should know better.... and state and federal regulations should be enforced, not just pushed aside. (If you have never watched it - you should!!)
-
2 pointsYou're right they do. So why should I or anyone else pay for them?
-
2 pointsCould not have said it better myself. You also said it nicer than I would have. Lol all of us hate the whole welfare/snap/wic system. Especially me!! Because where was it when my family was down to 1 paycheck and struggling? We could not even get the most basic of help which at that time was WIC
-
2 pointsGiving them incentive to pop out more paychecks is a good start? If you cant afford to have a baby quit spreading your legs.
-
2 pointsnot sure if i mentioned it before, but there is a big potential draw flowing right through the city and much of CHemung COunty as well. the river has long been blamed( unjustly in many cases) for many of the area's woes; why not finally benefit from it? work with DEC and other sportsmens clubs in the area to develop sections of it for trophy fishing which could not only draw folks in for that but also potentially for small businesses related to the industry. expanding on that kayak/canoe seems to be pretty popular in other areas, why not encourage that as well?
-
1 pointI don’t think anyone actually believes they’re being sent to a plantation, but they'd still be right to be upset/disgusted to receive this message out of the blue - it’s just pure racism
-
1 pointHere's an example: I'm going with foreign actor based on the way this is written.
-
1 pointBut I'd hope the investigation takes the timing of recent events into consideration. And in particular, the publicizing of that specific DEC office's involvement in those events.

1 pointYou can stick green bean salad in your ass, it looks disgusting. You can keep the sweet potatoes too. And who has macaronui and cheese on Thanksgiving? Mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing are a must have. Of course.

1 pointGonna break my internet hiatus to jump in here on two things that just bug Hell out of me ! #1 just how are reparations going to make things “ right “ in Anyone’s “ best interest “ ? And if not Reparations ( cash ) just what do you think will make things right ?! And to be clear , I sure as hell am not in favor of reparations as I am not guilty of owning slaves . And while we are at it lets discuss the Blacks back in that period that “owned “ slaves … Say what ?😮 # 2 Now let’s discuss all the Union Soldiers that were killed in the Civil War , remember that ? What reparations are they … Me “entitled “ to ? Oh yes , an ancestor of mine fought and died at Gettysburg with the Pennsylvania Regiment, my proof , his name is on the Monument along with the Others that were killed there ! For what did he die ( other than States Rights ) . So tell me Pvt Snowball , what will make that “right “ by my family ? And to What or How much am I Entitled?!
-
1 pointHistory sucks sometimes and bad things were done to a lot of different groups of people over the centuries. Handing out cash is not going to change that. It’s really that simple.
-
1 pointNo, but the Democratic Party would probably be happy to return to those days. Republicans fought to end the slavery, you remember? Lincoln was a republican. Southern states were democratic before and during Civil War.
-
1 pointTime to pack it in, Bibi, you made your point. Also saw on the news that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the US could play a role in stabilizing Palestine. After contributing to the destruction of it for the past year. 🙄

1 pointI think I’d heard something a few months ago (probably a news conference or IDA interview) along the lines of “here’s some stuff that’s in the works”. But apparently not enough advertising that I caught any specific date/time details on TV/radio commercials, etc running up to it. I live in Chemung County, but have received mailers from the Gaffer District with a calendars of events in Corning. That could be something that events in Elmira might want to consider. Active (paid) advertising is an important tool to reach those people who don’t follow or subscribe to newsletters or pages where it was announced. It would be interesting to hear numbers on attendance for various Arena events to see how their turnout is. That could help identify whether different events and/or approaches to PR and advertising need to be assessed.
