  1. Well - if he fires the AG on day one, as he says he can do, and he gets behind law enforcement officers - then he deserves a chance far as I am concerned. Maybe we can deal with the dems and a-holes in the Legislature on the next go-around.

    Blue Dolphin

Every time we go to the greater Binghamton area for something - we usually stop at the Blue Dolphin. One of our favorite local restaurants - been going there for 25 years or more. It's not one of those all-too-often boring same old same old chain restaurants.
  3. Been there to Ollie's a few times and I concur with Chris - you won't find everything there but it's a cool place non-the-less. What's even better is, I don't have to go to Ithaca to go to Ollie's anymore. Woowho!
  4. I don't remember a Dog-n-Burger by the EFA - there was one on south side at Bulkhead and another one over by Ernie Davis school. We used to leave the dance at the Hayloft and race right over to bulkhead to catch Dog-n-burger before they closed for the night. yum yum
  5. How did Nichols Discount and Dog-n-Burger not make the list? Five burgers for a buck!!! Can you believe it? We've come a long ways baby. (:(
  6. And I thought no one could be worse than Cuomo! What was I thinking???
  7. I remember going to Sears in downtown Elmira in the late 50s and early 60s with my folks (I was a teenager) and riding the escalators up and down while they were shopping. We were simply amazed by those moving stairs.
  8. And we thought nobody could run NY worse than Cuomo was doing. Holy moly!!! Appreciate what you're trying to do Mr. O'Mara but you need some help (and somebody new) in the governor's office, as well as more help in the Legislature.
  9. We've been there to eat many times - and my honey bun would spend two hours in the shops afterwards (which was a bit less enjoyable than eating there - for me anyway). Maybe we'll run down there before the end of February - just for old times sake. It will be a sad day when it closes, to be sure.
  10. It doesn't take much research to learn about crime rates in Upstate NY. Couple of things: upstate covers a rather large area and there are many categories of "crime" ranging from murder to petite larceny. Well there may not be rise of crime in one area - there may be a significant rise in another area. There is crime in upstate to be sure - and there has been a rise in crime - as some of the following articles point out: Ithaca - on average a crime happens every 2 1/2 hours - https://crimegrade.org/violent-crime-ithaca-ny/ Shootings all over Elmira - https://www.mytwintiers.com/crime/elmira-shootings-where-are-most-of-elmiras-shootings-happening/ Binghamton area - Total crimes are up - violent crimes are up - property crime is up - https://www.areavibes.com/binghamton-ny/crime/ Syracuse area - total crimes, violent crimes and property crimes all up - https://www.areavibes.com/binghamton-ny/crime/ From a Rochester news outlet in December 2021 - https://www.rochesterfirst.com/news/local-news/mcso-rochesters-homicide-rate-up-126-higher-than-buffalo-and-syracuse/ Suffice it to say - we have a problem of way too much crime in upstate NY (IMHO).
  11. I remember it like it was yesterday - July 1970 - I canceled our subscription for home delivery of the Star Gazette. That's when I realized for the first time that the supposed National news was being spoon fed to the masses by a small hand full of people. Almost all the national articles had the byline (AP) or (UPI) and they were the arbiters of the news - take it or leave it - the local papers all across the nation just regurgitated whatever the AP or UPI had to say verbatim. And sadly, with the small hand full of billionaires currently controlling the news business, I believe the situation is even worse today. With that said, it would be nice to have a polite discussion of the "National News". Skeptic that I am though, not sure if that's possible.
  12. New York State outdoor Burn Ban in NYS from March 16 thru May 14. Open burning is prohibited in New York, with several exceptions: Campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed. Small cooking fires are allowed. Fires cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished. https://youtu.be/zNdd9ibSmQw Only charcoal or clean, untreated or unpainted wood can be burned. Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires are allowed.
  13. You're absolutely correct MsKreed. I sat through those state mandated sexual harassment courses at my workplace a number of times over the years. And why does none of that apply to him - I haven't a clue.
  14. Yup Kevin - another one comes forward today. King Cuomo needs to take his rather large ego and his bullying attitude and hit the road Jack (and don't come back). He doesn't seems to have many friends these days- nearly everybody has thrown him under the bus, except for Bill and Hill, I guess.

    Zocalo - Ithaca

We had lunch here yesterday - I had the Santa Fe burrito - wife had the chicken fajita. Oh my gosh, it was so good. http://zocaloithaca.com/
  16. If you haven't visited this place, you really should consider taking a ride over there - we went with some friends and had a good time. It's a pretty interesting place. https://www.flbm.org/
  17. If you belong to the American Legion or VFW or if you or a family member are/were a member of the military, you may be interested in visiting the Purple Heart Museum. As things open up and start getting back to normal (or somewhat normal) why not consider taking a trip to this museum. https://www.thepurpleheart.com/
  18. Are you aware that seniors can enter NY state parks for free on weekdays? More info here: https://parks.ny.gov/admission/golden-park-program.aspx
  19. You are entirely welcome Linda.
  20. Linda - I found that Joyce Tice's site on the internet was a treasure trove of information back when I was actively doing research. It covers just a three county area in the twin tiers - but I was mainly looking at lines in Chemung County at the time and I found it to be very helpful.
  21. IMHO - .00594% sounds like the amount of truth you might find in any story the NY Times reports on.
  22. I was lucky enough to be able to take a tour of the mine in Lansing several years ago with a friend who worked there. It was amazing to see but a bit scarey at the same time - miles of big tunnels. Since the elevator catastrophe however, underground tours are no longer allowed there. BTW - if you think salt has no smell, think again. I could not and would not work there.
  23. Reading your articles has got me thinking about picking up the pieces where I left off about 15 years ago. I've got bits and pieces of family history scattered and unorganized all over the place - LOL - it's been years since I've looked at it. I too hit a brick wall or two in my research - and then life kinda got in the way, as they say. I think one problem I had was trying to follow and research too many lines - one leads to another, then another, and another, and so on. For instance, while researching my father's line, I found that his mother was a "Thomas" and there were several Thomas' in and around the Erin and Park Station areas. Which led me to the Erin Historical Society which houses a lot of information on that line and they even have an old Thomas family bible there - a wealth of information on births, deaths and marriages, etc. It was very interesting reading. I found my father's grandfather who was rumored to be the best cradler in the county. And an aunt that married the fellow that owned and ran the old hotel at Park Station (got a photo of that somewhere). Ugh - I've got to get back into it and get it all organized some day somehow...

    Van Etten

The old one room school house in Swartwood. My father lived near here and went to school here when he was a child.
