How The Fight Over Fracking Reemerged In New York

Nearly a decade after New York passed its controversial fracking ban, the debate over resource extraction in the state has returned.

Gathered at the state Capitol earlier this month, a group of elected officials, environmentalists, and anti-fracking advocates repeated a chant many knew well. Calls to “Ban fracking now!” rang out, with state Sen. Lea Webb leading the crowd.

Webb, like many of the others who had gathered to rally against a new gas and oil extraction proposal in the state, has made this demand before. Yet, many believed that fight was long over — New York banned hydraulic fracking in 2014. Since then, as oil and gas companies began fracking in neighboring Pennsylvania and other states, shale formations in the Empire State have remained untouched.

But now a new proposal to drill into the Marcellus and Utica shales has revived the decades-long fight and surfaced questions over the feasibility of a "greener" method of extracting oil and gas.

I can’t help but wonder how many of these people who make it to all these protests own more than a half acre to acre of land, if they own any at all?

Because it’s really easy to be against something when you don’t stand to benefit from it in any way.

interesting thing is; the method sequesters carbon which was supposed to be a good thing. ive seen articles where "experts" say the amount sequestered in this process is not really that much....this coming from very same folks who love to say every little bit helps

Don't ever count out the stupidity of some people to support (and sometimes even facilitate) actions that are against their own interest.

When Seneca Lake was in the middle of the LP Storage debate.....there were plenty who proudly planted yard signs right in front of the LP tanks that heated their homes.

We confused, amused and saddened for humanity, all at once.

ITHACA, N.Y. — The New York State Assembly passed legislation banning carbon dioxide drilling and fracking Tuesday after extensive lobbying efforts from both elected officials and activists began in fall 2023. 

The bill, introduced February of this year by Assemblymember Anna Kelles (D-Ithaca) and Sen. Lea Webb (D-Binghamton), now awaits a Senate floor vote before it is moved to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk to be signed into law.

A bill to ban CO2 fracking has passed in both the New York State Assembly and New York State Senate, and now awaits approval on New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's desk.

The Assembly bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Anna Kelles and co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo among others, passed in the Assembly earlier this month. Last Wednesday, the senate bill, which was sponsored by State Senator Lea Webb, passed.
