  1. I thought I heard there is a proposal for the truck stop to go across the street from the Dandy on Church St in Elmira after the Speer project didn't go through.
  2. I have a problem with this. What was done to the Aftrican Americans was awful, but what happened to the Native Americans, Irish, Catholics, Italians, was just as bad. The KKK believed in the National White Protestant Nation. I personally think the Native Americans got the worst deal. They were kind and helped the people assimilate to this land...They believed the land was for everyone to use. We stole it from them piece by piece...If it wasn't for their kindness, the Europeans would not have created sustainable colonies here. How did we repay their kindness? Just sad. No money can correct the discrimination and white entitlement that was the formation of the United States. All we can do is what we are doing now. Give all US citizens the right to the best education through grade 12. Give all US citizens the right to attend a college for further education. Each generation is a little less prejudiced than the one before. We currently are not treating all people equal, but it isn't as bad as Archie Bunker either..The discontinuance of redlining is making it easy for Americans to live anywhere.
  3. If a district has more than 40% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch, the state reimburses for them to provide free breakfast and lunch for all students.
  4. I personally think Waltz had that right...When I lived in WV it also worked like that. All children had a free breakfast and a free lunch. In WV, there was even a clothing voucher for low income families. This was used to buy the back to school clothes. It would be nice if all children in NY also had a free breakfast and lunch at school...The backpack program is not run by the districts. It is funded by someone else and just distributed at the schools.
  5. It makes sense for Cornell to help support ICSD. Corning Inc does a lot to help the Corning Painted Post schools. The idea is that the employees' children attend there...and happy children lead to happy employees...and no snow days for me unless Cornell is closed.
  6. The family has to be food insecure. Most that qualify for WIC/food stamps are not eligible for the backpack program, since they can get food using those programs. Generally the counselors determine who is food insecure where I teach. I don't know if that is standard protocol or not.
  7. I was stopped by county workman...a county truck was putting the lines on all the roads that were paved in the Town of Southport...So not a Pine City/Town of Southport issue.
  8. Teenagers used to be interested in these postions. After COVID hit and they found things to do online, they no longer have the urge to leave the house to get away from their parents.
  9. When my daughter went to the University of South Dakota, they had Lakota as a foreign language there. So in regions where the indigenous live, I do think they are creating pathways to keep their language alive.
  10. That would be the easiest way to encourage people to move. If memory serves me right, homeowners insurance won't cover flood damage...Have no fear the government offers Flood Insurance...Why oh why did we get involved? People would have relocated and not rebuilt from the beginning.
  11. Trader Joe's, smaller Staples and Bath and Body Works, along with a new REI (Sporting Goods store) are all going in there. It was amazing to me how quickly the Tops logo was removed to make way for REI.
  12. The backpack program sends home meals every weekend for children that qualify for free lunch...I teach in a school where everyone gets a free lunch because so many qualify, but only the ones that qualify and the parents say yes they'd like it, have the back pack of food sent home. It has extra food for long weekends (like this weekend) and vacation weeks. During the summer, school parks have free lunches for anyone interested in stopping by...
  13. My generation doesn't volunteer like my parents did. I am still working but retirement age. On my way to TST BOCES, I have watched an American Legion and VFW close on Rt 13. One is a real estate company now, the other was just demolished. I wonder how long the Moose organization on the main drag is going to last. The networking that happened at these organizations is now happening online.
  14. I wonder if school busses were not built to the same standard as trucks. My son is in the Army and was stationed at Ft Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK. I know what you mean about the engine block warmers. He had to use one in his garage.
  15. Buy a solar array...Then you just have a fee for the utility company to take your extra and give it back to you in the winter...Or be bold and get your own battery so you don't have to pay them anything. I was scared to go that route when we added solar..
