When I retire maybe. Leaving at 6:30 AM and not getting home until 9 PM 2 nights a week at 5:30-6 the other 3 nights is not real conducive to remembering to water them.

There are way too many kinds of potato. I just close my eyes and pick one kind. Is there a kind you recommend for the area? I want sweet potatoes but couldn't find them as seed potaotes. Any ideas? Yes waiting so long is the hardest part. I really want to plant during my April vacation. Sigh...

I tried that the first year my pool was filled. My sister has a Memorial Day get together in Pittsburgh...So I looked for plants the following weekend..and there were no vegetable plants to be found anywhere...I took that to mean it was also to late to plant seeds...So I just planted the few half-dead ones I could find. I have the seedsheet and can wait until I return from my sister's to lay it down in my raised bed. When should I plant the potatoes in the tires?

The Elegy Of The Hand Written Letter
Beekeeper commented on Sean Dietrich's blog entry in Sean of the South
People cannot read cursive. My son is in the Army. He had rented a house in Alaska after a long road trip and was spending Christmas in his house sleeping on a new couch waiting for his furniture, etc. that was shipped in July to be delivered. My sister sent him a Christmas card and it came back. She called to verify she had the right address. She did. She called him to try to figure out what happened. He asked, "Was it written in cursive?" When she shared yes, he said, "I bet the mailman can't read cursive." -
I do wonder how much is spent on Common Core and creating Regents testing..With the push to a new one diploma for all coming from NYS that will start in 2027, there should be money that could be moved. I do wonder if any testing will continue. We are not getting a lot of information about what the requirements will be for one kind of diploma for all...

Since Trump likes to stir fear, it doesn't surprise me that people are afraid Medicaid will be cut. Since Congress has the power of the purse, not Trump. Medicaid is not going anywhere. I also doubt that states will let the Cabinet of Education be dismantled. It will still exist. IMHO the Federal government doesn't want to lose the power of being in charge of the state curriculum....Common Core was forced upon the states. None could refuse because they need the Federal funds to balance their budgets. Medicaid is billed by the school districts for all the speech, occupational therapy and physical therapy that students receive that are eligible for Medicaid. It is a huge source of funding for the districts. I am hoping that since the writers of our Constitution were fearful of someone trying to become king, the guard rails they put in place make Trump's dream of being in complete control nothing more than a dream...The courts hopefully will put him in his place. It doesn't look like Congress is making any attempt..Senate is also looking hopeless. So far, the courts however are making him hire people back..So I guess time will tell about the rest.

Tips On Where And How To Find Shed Antlers
Beekeeper replied to Twin Tiers Living's topic in Field And Stream
No thank you. I am a city girl scared of what lives in my 20acres, most of which is forest. Just last year, I glanced out the sliding glass doors while carrying dinner to the table to see a bobcat taking down a deer. My husband kept a "firing range" near the solar panels for my son in the Army to use as shooting practice when he was home. That's where the bobcat killed him. The idea of going in the forest with the bobcat and coyotes around to look for deer antlers doesn't sound like fun to me. Did you do cow tipping back in the day? I was amazed at how many of my friends in college thought that was a fun midnight activity. (I went to Penn State that is in the middle of farms. We use the plowed wheat fields to part for the home games.) The sound of the herd crying is something I will not soon forget. -
I don't know how much is sent overseas. I do know that many farmers in the MidWest are paid yearly not to grow to keep the supply at the right place to meet demand so the prices don't fall below what it cost to grow. Fertilizer is expensive. Getting water to the crops with the crazy weather is expensive. Cost of diesel has gone up, so getting the crops to where they need to go is expensive. Most farmers borrow money to buy seeds. If they don't sell at a high enough price to break even, they are in trouble, Wish I knew more about the economics of that.

How Daylight Savings Time Could Affect Your Health
Beekeeper replied to Twin Tiers Living's topic in Health & Wellness
I am not a fan. I'd prefer we just keep normal time all year, but I am pretty sure I'm in the minority. In 2.5 years, I won't care at all. I'll be retired and waking with the sun. -
True. But if we are growing more than we need, maybe it's okay that some of it is gone. That used to be the way things worked. Cities expanded, farms were bought out and turned into suburbs.

How Daylight Savings Time Could Affect Your Health

My biggest issue with time change is that the sun is back in my face as it rises on my way to Ithaca...It is no longer in my face on the way home..While I like having an excuse of the cause of my wrinkles, I don't really like the time change. I think it exists so Little League games don't have to be called due to darkness. Beyond that, not sure it serves any purpose. As for keeping it. We tried that and it didn't work. Children had to wait in the dark for buses and they got hit by cars. -
The taxes in Ithaca are crazy! People at work complain all the time. Most of us that work in Ithaca can't afford to live there. Teachers come from Cortland, Groton, Dryden, and I come from Elmira to work in Ithaca. Only teachers with husbands that are lawyers or engineers or professors at Cornell live in Ithaca. The more they do to help the homeless, the more homeless seem to come. It does seem like a never ending money pit for them.

Can I wait until April vacation to do this? (the first week of April). It is really cold and windy today. I don't have the courage. Where is Spring?

When I first started teaching, I was in rural Missouri. This was1983 and the farmer aid was a budget cut. I saw many a farmer lose their farm to bigger corporations. The family farm hasn't been around in a big way since then...It is corporations. My daughter lives in NE and my husband hates to fly. It is amazing to me how much corn we as a country grow. In theory, if we got rid of the pay to not farm,,which we have done since ?, I do wonder if some of that land would be sold to developers and become houses. I grew up on McRoberts Rd in Pittsburgh. It was called that because it used to be McRoberts farm where it was built. Maybe we should let some of that farm land become houses.

Good luck! We couldn't even impeach him when he was in office before. IMHO all we can hope for is that democrats get a majority in both the house and Senate in 2026. Until then, he has too many "believers".
-
That would be great!

I am surprised he cares. He has 4 years to do whatever he wants and see what Congress will pass for him. (and which ideas the Supreme Court will let stand). Since he cannot run again anyway, does he actually care what others think? Safe to say Musk doesn't.

Corrections Officers In Elmira & Other Locations On Strike
Beekeeper replied to MsKreed's topic in Local News
I am with you. As a teacher, I have never been allowed to strike. They are public employees too. If enough quit, changes will have to be made. -
Actually that's not right either...My daughter was born in 1995 and was 5 almost 6 when we moved here...so 2001..Right before 9/11.

Oops! I meant 2011 not 2021

We planted 5 apple trees in 2021 when we first moved back to the area. Only 3 survived. Three crab apples were already on the property. We lost two in that hurricane in 20?11?. So we have 4 trees...One old sad looking thing and three stable. The one left from long ago was planted as part of the Knapp Farm. My husband's grandfather bought the land and sold the small farmhouse. The one that is left is from when it was on the farm.

How does have never been pruned, didn't know that was a thing fit into this?
