  1. Mine is definitely eclectic:

A few of those are the wife's but mostly they're mine. She has her own shelf on the other side of the doorway.

Many years ago when I was staying at the Seneca reservation with a friend, he noted some of the books in the room and pointed out that you can tell a lot about a person not just by the books they read, but the ones they keep on display ( for lack of a better term ). I don't think there'd be any surprises for anyone who knows me when looking at my shelves! LOL

As you can see my tastes, while all over the place, are pretty consistent. Of course what you can't see here are the ebooks I read, but those are largely post apocalyptic fiction with a few other genres sprinkled in when they grab my eye.

  2. So today I started picking rocks in preparation of planting these damned wildflower seeds. I got a little less than 1/3 of the way in and suddenly remembered that picking rocks is arguably the most miserable task in all of agriculture. How I ever did it for two full days at $5/hr years ago is beyond me. ( Although even years later the farmer told anyone who would listen, "He picked rocks all day and never complained." And as I told her, I did, she just didn't hear me. )

So realizing that I was ona fast track to complete destruction of my back for the forseeable future, I decided to hell with it. They're wildflowers, they should be able to grow with some rocks in the ground. Seed goes in, or rather on, the ground tomorrow.

Catholic Churches in Corning went from 3 to 1, Elmira from 7 to 2..Both Catholic Schools are closed.  Wonder how long Notre Dame will have enough students to remain open.

You're not wrong, @Beekeeper and it's sad to see. But the Catholic Church not only had that scandal that drove a lot of people away, they also seem to have lost touch with the people who make up the congregation. People aren't going to go where they don't feel warm and welcome, and as much as I have issues with them, the "mega churches", even around here, saw a way to fill that void people felt. And look at how well they're doing.

Personally, I've been to church more in the past two years than I have in the past 20 because I joined a fraternal organization that is Catholic based. Having that friendship and sense of community makes church not feel so foreign. Even though I still don't know what the heck is going on since they changed the services.

You are 100% correct I lost track of the kids whose parents just pushed them through the program.

Yeah, and for the record, I don't mean to imply that it's a thing that happens only since girls were allowed into the organization. It's gone on for years. Those boys don't learn, or at least don't retain, a damned thing as they fly through the requirements.

My problem ( well, one of many ) is there was instantly a push to be "the first." There's no way in hell that happened organically nor legitimately. Case in point:

Junior Isabella Tunney: the first female Eagle Scout. Yes, that’s right. She’s the first female to become an Eagle Scout. The Boy Scouts of America announced an inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts rather than an individual, and this class consists of women who earned their Eagle Scout merit from Oct. 1-30. Since Tunney earned her Eagle Scout merit on October 1, she is among the very first women to earn hers.

I joined the Boy Scouts of America on Feb. 1st, 2019; [it was] the first day girls were allowed to join,” Tunney said.

Tunney is the founder of her very own troop, #5384.

As a scout, Tunny has earned all 137 merit badges.

Tunny added, “Over the course of the past year and a half...

I added the bold for emphasis to make my point.

I absolutely refuse to recognize this kid's "accomplishments." She didn't earn it.

  5. I was told that the fair committee could have signed the company that does the carnival at the mall,"Main Event", as early as November 2023 but decided they were happy with Wheelock and signed with them. Not that anyone could have seen this coming, but with Wheelock's showing at last year's fair, and the public response, it's hard to see how someone could say they were "happy" with it.

  6. This fresh turned dirt really struck me as pretty this evening.

I need to get this planted so I can move on. Problem is it’s all I can did to keep up with the mowing lately. I turned this dirt in a light sprinkle, just to get it done and kill some grass trying to come up through.

    Hopefully this weekend.

“NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the bright flash of the X-ray flare. It was the strongest since 2005, rated on the scale for these flares as X8.7.

Bryan Brasher at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado said it may turn out to have been even stronger when scientists gather data from other sources.”

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The non-profit group “Friends of the Chemung River Watershed” held the first of several “pop up” clean-up events happening in May. Today we saw Executive Director Elizabeth Zilinski picking up trash by herself at Jim Nelson Park on West Hudson Street during a light rain at noon.

The next cleanup is set for Wednesday May 15th at Mark Twain Riverfront Park, from noon to 1 pm.

“We typically see 30 to 40 volunteers for a big cleanup. For cleanups like this we’ll usually have 4 or 5. Today was a rainy day. I was hoping for at least one, and I got one. I’m counting you,” Zilinski told 18 News reporter Nick Dubina.

“We’re going to start doing these one-hour cleanups at lunchtime around different parks here in Chemung County, and eventually we’ll expand to the other counties. What we’re looking for is how much garbage there is in the park. What things the park needs fixed up for example, we encountered a lot of graffiti at this park. So that’s something we’d want to bring to the attention of the city and they will send somebody out to fix that up,” Zilinski said,
