.It’s highly unlikely that Israel had any  plans to “flatten” Hamas (or Gaza) as of October 6th

my concern there is that israeli "settlers" have been slowly chipping away at palestinian lands and homes over the years with security/IDF turning a blind eye. flattening gaza and killing thousands of palestinians will open up quite a bit of land to re-settle

Hamas should be flattened, just like they flattened 260 innocent kids at a concert.  Unfortunately innocent Palestinians get hurt too which is why they were trying to get them out of there.  Terrorist do not just give up.  Ever.

I do not see Hamas as terrorists. I see them as freedom fighters.

the sheer stupidity of that statement is simply mind-boggling

except after Israel told them to move south(to be safe), Israel started bombing that very area. Hamas needs to be eradicated, and at some point Joe-palestine needs to start diming them out. as much as hamas has stated israel needs to be wiped off the planet, there are large numbers of Israelis that say the same of Palestinians(not just hamas). what hamas did was beyond deplorable yet it does not justify the wanton destruction and disregard for innocent life that we currently see from Israel....at this point they are no better than those terrorists. one should also remember just as reports have established that hospital was a result of an errant hamas rocket; reports also confirmed Egypt had warned Israel of an impending attack ahead of October 7th yet were completely off guard? its time Israel is told same as russia with Ukraine, no more free passes

No one gets free services. The home owner is charged - fairly exorbitantly - for services provided by the city.

while I don't disagree with the premise, i need to offer clarification. the cost of any remediation done by the municipality or its subcontractors IS initially paid by that municipality, which then places a lien on the property and is  expected to be paid back but isn't necessarily guaranteed.

Because the generic shows intention. Jim wants to give Elmirans a sense of pride in their city. He wants to make the city a "drive-to" not a "drive-through".  To achieve that, he will initiate a new long term plan for the city; one which focuses on the well-being of the whole population, and not just on economic growth.

I intend to be retired by age 55, is that enough to make it happen? those intentions you mention are admirable but those are obvious ideas that anyone seems to have yet to act upon. I've visited your Candidate's website and unfortunately its long on intentions and very short on specific plans.

the generic is much akin to throwing everything against the wall and see what sticks, much is wasted and little is successful; details like HOW will homes be provided(realistically), WHAT will be done to entice higher quality jobs to the area, WHO will be used as resources to accomplish goals, WHERE will funding come from to obtain the stated goals and WHAT is a realistic timeline, so that success can truly be measured?

The candidate that offers those types of answers( not just ideas) is going to reach many more voters, and even across party lines.

  6. I was on a trip down the rabbit hole the other day, saw a clip regarding religions, was interesting so read up on background of the topic: Aramaic, a 3,000 year old language, and was spoken by Jesus. In this language the word "Elah(i)" means God with the "i" added it is "my God". Look familiar? it should, because in Arabic the word is "Allah" and in Hebrew it is " Elohim"

3,00 years, or more( there's lots of reading about the evolution of the word and a whole rabbit hole unto itself) these people have essentially followed, worshipped, fought over and killed and displaced, all in the name of the same God. if greed and seeking of power were taken out of the equation, one could almost hope the current parties would realize that

The concerns of the people are well-known and very generic.  Answers tend to be the same.

and that right there is why we here in the forum are pressing for specifics..its not that anyone here has a specific love for the current Mayor, but .because to date, generic answers do not seem to have pulled the City out of its near-60 year slump. So why would any voter in the City of Elmira choose the generic they dont know?

  8. bit long but notice the current talking point of "proportionality" being continually pushed, yet the point Mr. Youssef offers showing the disproportionality of years past goes un-answered? though bit sarcastic, he's been likened to the Egyptian Jon Stewart( they apparently are friends) he does make very salient points

Once again 'Gym" Jordan failed to get enough votes for House Speaker.

every Dem in DC is walking around with a super-hard on right now

while every voter who keeps all 535 of these jokers in office should be walking around with heads hung low

This point has been twisting my brain.

It makes the skeptic in me wonder if their motive is to keep innocent Palestinians in Gaza for the very purpose of creating some self-fulfilling prophesy that ensures IDF’s reaction causes more civilian deaths that “prove” how evil Israel is.

i read somewhere that its been said( even among arabs) that the only place palestinians are treated worse than europe is in Palestine.

Egypt befuddles me as there are reports that Egypt had warned israel like 3 days in advance that something big was gonna go down, though no details as to where

We also recommend tipping employees you believe are being paid less than a fair wage.

this just gets the employer off the hook for paying better wages. i am paying for a service/product provided, not employing those providing it. if i feel they have done above what they are required or even just really put in 100%(which all working folks should aka not doing bare minimum) then we tip and cash at that.

lattes, drive-throughs, or cashiers and the like.....get the heck outta here

It shows that the person posting has not bothered to read what they written.

are you trying to get a rise out of people? I mean its just too coincidental that you type this right after multiple posts with spelling or grammatical errors.

Again I don't know how to edit posts.

if you practiced what you lament about others, you'd have much less need of the edit button that is available...

Back on topic: no one disputes Mr. Hassle has ideas about what could be done; the issue is there are no real substantive plans of going about achieving them. Anyone can say they want to honor the past, reduce taxes, house the homeless, and yes, it sounds really great. I want to patent an invention that will revolutionize healthcare and reduce costs

former Democrat now threatens to take votes from former President Donald Trump in 2024.

    run a better frigging candidate!

really best thing would have been: trump nominated/elected to be speaker of House. takes him off the POTUS board, ramaswamy or someone else now steps up in polls, and Biden has ZERO chance at re-election. 2025 rolls around, bring up vote to remove Trump from speakership like they did with Mccarthy and viola he either dies of old age before next race and we are spared the geriatric-football hump weve dealt with the last 6 years

My guy Hassell has more to offer than the incumbent Mayor. He has ideas, enthusiasm, empathy. What does Mandell have to offer?

then he needs to articulate those using specifics...toute de suite because it certainly seems as though he does not.

Mandell may not have much of a clue either, but the ability to cite specific thoughts, actions or plans is enough to put him ahead of Mr. Hassle

  15. speaking in general terms: on reddit, one can go to see videos out of the war in  ukraine, on a lark i tried the same for israel/palestine....there is such a thread. watching some videos from last few years of how israel has treated palestinians is something to behold. IDF beating and/or man-handling kids( like less than 12), kicking over a person in a wheelchair, shooting a palestinian for trying to prevent them from taking his generator. then theres the "settlers" blatantly taking over homes, some with the excuse that "if i dont take it someone else will" or farmland being co-opted by "settlers" while israeli police say why complain theyre doing your work for you and show us your papers( to prove ownership).

this is not to excuse what those sub-human hamas cowards did( rotting in hell covered in pig-blood is way too good for them) but you must wonder how long can a dog be beaten until it lashes out? frankly Israel has overplayed the injured party far too long all the while dehumanizing and pushing out any who are not of the jewish faith....both factions are wrong; israel should keep in mind what happened just 2 generations ago as they are now following the Nazi playbook, albeit with better P.R. and in Palestine, they should see that Hamas sees them as nothing more than cannon fodder to foist out those killed whenever retaliation occurs. the populace needs to just dime out each p.o.s that has anything to do with this situation and no longer tolerate the presence of Hamas. the Nations of the world need to step up also; simply say we will n longer do ANY "business" until a two-state solution is arrived at, and stuck to.....sending money or troops to israel is certainly NOT a way to help

    ymmv

There is no need for any cop interacting directly with the public to be armed (and primed to shoot first and ask questions later.)

You do realize what the job/expectations are of Law Enforcement right?  Your (mis)characterization that they are "primed to shoot first..." would argue otherwise. First, it is no less offensive than stereotyping blacks, Jews, Gays or any other social/racial group that i am sure would outrage you or any sensible person were they to hear it. Im curious given your statement, what your views on those officers that have been gunned down(ambushed) when responding to seemingly minor calls?

Second; imagine your home being burgled while you are there or worse yet, sexual assault; when you call the police what is your expectation for them to do, particularly if that criminal is armed, when they arrive? i really dont believe a polite request to cease and follow them to the squad car is gonna quite have the results you seem to imagine.

as has been said time and again: there are bad apples in EVERY group; to judge the many based upon those few is the epitome of ignorance. is there room for more training in dealing with mental issues...of course but before expecting them to add THAT to the plate, perhaps we need to demand better/more mental health care from those we vote into office and hold THEM responsible first.

Law enforcement is designed to deal with the criminal element or at minimum enforce the laws that are supposed to keep society civil. More often than not, when weapons are involved in criminal acts, its an easy bet, the police will be outgunned...Expecting them to use talk-therapy or blow kisses back at those using weapons

  17. we were at mall getting shoes tonight, wasnt even 730pm and the amount of remaining stores that were closed was sad. i suppose the mall is getting a taste of what happened to elmira when IT came along, but its not surprising, weve visited family in Niagra falls for years, and there are quite a few similar setups that are in same condition.

  18. Your idea in the other thread about foot patrols is 100% spot on; i think there should be varied and regular routes in different parts of the City that gives officers and the public to be in closer contact; opportunities to get to know one an other instead of a predator v prey scenario( not demonizing LEO btw)

  19. 23 hours ago, Elizabeth Whitehouse said:

though he would like to see more on the ground, community-based activity. That is, more foot patrols; more face-to-face interaction.

100% City police should have short, varied routes throughout different sections of the City in order to be amongst the people (so to speak)

How often do you wave? I do it every time I see one out here as a way of saying “thank you”, and they almost always wave back.

Careful, i did that up here few years ago, instead of waving, he pulled me over, claimed i didn't stop long enough at the stop sign and ticketed me.

that said, its much like any other group; there's bound to be assholes you just cannot judge the whole based on the minority. I've long advocated for, at minimum, drive throughs by deputies as there has been an uptick in speeding, break-ins and suspicious activity over the years yet the response has been we are a "low needs area". well many have gotten to the point of not bothering to call because when/if they show up usually within the first 5 minutes of interaction, its rare not to hear " well there's really not much we can do..."

if you look at the majority of those who "hate" police, often times it is because they have run afoul of the Law, got caught yet do not take responsibility for their actions.

if we have too many of anything, id say it would be career politicians of ALL stripes
