I remember going to Marshalls in Horseheads to get dog food.  I also remember the smell

Sweepin’s from the feed cars made for good hog food at a reduced price as well . That smell was corn and molasses fermenting, used to love that smell .

I would be very interested in visiting the "good number of shelters" that Elmira has to offer. I would be happy to contribute to their upkeep. Give us some details.

But would you “ be happy “ to visit the riverfront area as I outlined in my post above , no not accompanied by an entourage and at the times suggested ? Bet my bottom dollar you won’t/ wouldn’t.
But if you wanted to see one of the shelters provided there is one very nice shelter across from St Joseph Hospital as one example .
As to solutions to the homeless , the drug addled , destructive population infesting Elmira , maybe we could transport them and their ilk to your lovely Corning . You know , sharing the joy so to speak so you wouldn’t need take to your stump on Elmira’s problems .
Moving along now , thank you .

    Voluntary homeless? I doubt it.

Really ?! How fortunate for Corning …

I know that there are some tent dwellers who have resisted going to shelters because of the rules and regulations associated with them. Not that Elmira has much in the way of shelters. So, if we accept that some people are happy living in tents, why doesn't the City designate an area for tent living? There are many unused/abandoned areas That could be used. Some of those areas might actually have bathrooms.

Okay , let’s call them “ tent dwellers “ then . San Francisco has tent dwellers as well and as you probably know they refer to them as homeless . So it’s safe to say Corning has homeless or voluntary unhoused or are we going to play the Word Game because , well … it’s Corning ?
And as discussed hyperbolically here , there are a good number of shelters , nice shelters in Elmira , I have seen them .
And I would leave you with this . I invite you to visit the riverside park area some evening , no not a drive through , actually sit there late evening . Or better yet walk on over to the parking garage stairway , please do , but have a spare pair of shoes for when you jump in your car to leave the area and get back to your wonderfully clean Corning !

The wildflowers are doing well though, so I've got that going for me I guess.

Something new popping up every day , all different colors and critters . Especially that fat old woodchuck that I thought was history, but he seems to move slower and more cautious now !

I do not live in Elmira, I live in Corning where I get my information from

I don’t live in Corning , nor do I get the Leader or the Star Regret . So could you tell me please , does Corning have any bridge people , scratch that … voluntary homeless ?

I've tried that last time and as you can see nothing changed but sure who doesn't like hearing themselves talk.

You have to keep pushing forward to make a change , or change your approach to make them see your point . Swimming upstream is never easy , just ask a Salmon !

    Nescience, huh?

I don't live in Elmira. From a distance, the City's response to the homeless crisis seems heartless.

So let me get your response straight .
Its “heartless “ to clear ( legally) unproductive, irresponsible trolls from under Elmira bridges, but perfectly fine sending Firefighters into a literally explosive situation from propane tanks and chemicals from meth cooking , not to mention all the other chemicals from the trash and garbage ?
Damn , just what World do you live on ?!

  8. Marshalls Feeds ?!
They used to process livestock feed and dog food locally . Through the heavy fog of an old mind , looking back as a young one we used to get hog and dog food from them . And I want to say location was Horseheads near the old American Legion 442 . There were three Feed processors in the Hhds , Big Flats area . Marshalls GLF ( Agway ) and Beacon Feeds . Please correct if needed .

If I was them make sure those families are in an apartment before anything else , removing the remaining trailers there, they are going to have to survey the ground because they don't know what buried there, after all that said and done let the field grow keep it maintained and place affordable tiny houses 🏘️ just an idea.

Sounds like a good plan !

Part one of the Southport shenanigans so now Chemung County  now owns the trailer park in Southport, along with the seven residents that are there hopefully they found some housing for them and not just kick them out and add to the already homeless problem. Why aren't  our County executives dealing with this? Why isn't our representative like Rodney J. Strange - 15th District Chemung County Legislator  strange dealing with this? This has been a problem for far too long and now that the owner of the trailer park is backed out now you don't know what to do with the property. If you want to actually do something for the community then do the job the people who elected you to do . Or should we call for a special election .

    #voteforanewtownboard

Copy and pasted … C’mon Pvt Snowball you can do better than that ! Whats your solution ?

As opposed to here closer to home where it seems there's a mini landfill on every street and road, garbage everywhere, etc.

Our crops down here are different. Some grow boats and junk cars , some grow old RVs and broken down mowers . The rest of us just grow weary of looking at it .

This is a question left for our local and state reps but don't complain when they start dying/od and are sleeping in front of parks, restaurants, school, hospitals then would it be you're problem?

Nope ! No complaints from me. And Still not going to be my problem . Look , we all have been given the wherewithal to make choices , good or bad  , to be a productive part of a community or to just drop out and be a burden on the community . They have made their Choice …

I'm just asking should every company follow these policies?

Just my own personal opinion of course . Its in the best interest of any company or business to hire the most Qualified applicant regardless of race or creed .
And as I posted before,  that statement at the bottom of employment applications used to , and still may , included Vietnam Veterans , pretty much hit me in the gut . Then theres the case of the qualified , top of her Nursing school class young lady , hired at a local hospital and was to start the next week … but instead got a call from said hospital telling her not to report to work as they had to , by Law ( EOP) , hire a woman of color  to fill the position . Now how do you think that young woman felt , yep hit her in the gut as well ! More so since the other woman quit two weeks later! Too bad that young woman ( my Wife ) fell and broke her ankle just before they called to say  that she could have the position after all .
So you see Equal Opportunity Programs aren’t all that Equal are they, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion is just more of the same !
As I stated at the beginning this is my personal opinion only but based on personal experiences.

He knew that when he bought the building.  It doesn't seem as if he has any interesting restoring it. Probably plans to develop the property into some mall-like venture. Yuck.

I would not worry about it becoming anything but an abatement situation with the City holding the demolition bill !

up front, yes, but they will attach the cost to any other property tax bills the owner might have. as long as he is current on his taxes seizure is moot

Like a really local or County  tax bill , in a township perhaps🤔

School is a limited public forum totally different no sign saying no trespassing under the bridge also

No snark intended … do you really think a No Trespassing sign is going to keep these people from living under the bridges? So they get arrested , they will be back on the street and living back under the bridge before the ink is dry on the arrest report . They don’t care , they have nor want responsibility for anything , at least a good portion of them that is .

The Church is privately owned,, but the owner cannot be located. Because of its historical and architectural significance, and its prominent location, the City should take responsibility. Raise the necessary money any way possible, stabilize it and give the bill to the owner.

All due respect to you for caring. But in this case the owner , term used loosely , is known by some of us here locally and was last located out of State with an unknown and iffy tax status . The owner ( cringe ) is almost guaranteed to not to really care if it is seized or under abatement by the City .
