I see Ithaca.com is no longer reporting much news from Candor and Spencer Van-Etten areas now as well. Another "news desert".

Honestly the only way for these "news desert" to get any coverage is if someone like a Figure Lakes 1 or HomeTown News or whatever that one in PA is comes to that area. There sadly won't be anyone covering news from the big outlets anymore.

Wasn't Sear the one location that was actually owned?  I think Sears owned it and last I knew they were renting space in there for storage - boats, RVs and such in winter.

No your thinking of the old Bon Ton location. But I still think the senior living complex would help. At the other end is pickleball courts as well.

  3. Maybe turn the Sears and now soon to be furniture store into senior apartments and have the mall cater to them. Not only do you give them access to Planet Fitness but have a few more stores catered to them. They can do their walking around the mall. Guthrie and Arnot are right across the way for doctors appointments. There are stores outside the mall like Walmart and Target not too far. Heck even try to get Regal to give seniors discount on tickets. Just throwing some ideas out there.

  4. I mean I don't know if you guys noticed but Comic-Con brought in a lot of business for the Food Courts this weekend. They were jammed packed on Saturday and even busy on Sunday. Big events in the event center could bring in extra business. The mall needs to fully reinvent themselves. Maybe look at what Binghamton is doing with their mall.

  5. I want this to work but man $18 for a corner ticket for lowest of the low hockey is ridiculous. I can go to cornell for top level division 1 hockey for $15. AHL in Rochester for about $20 bucks. It's just absurd and way too much. I rather go to the domes. At least that is fast paced and fun hockey.

  6. I had a great seat for both debates and let me just say, Jim Hassell failed to really show any growth over both debates, not offering up solutions except "We gotta get better" and then trying to downplay the whole Nick Grosso DUI thing was so bad. Considering I seen no campaigning, he came in 10 minutes before the debate with no prep, he has no chance at winning this election.

  7. To be fair to the workers at the fair, they are all volunteers but saying that this year had a lot of errors and missteps. I do think there needs to be a little more investment from the county to try and right the ship, working with more media outlets on the big acts or weekly acts. I noticed in those pictures the grandstand had a lot of empty seats. I know it's a lot of work and resources that need. As for getting more use out of the fairgrounds, a farmers market on like a Tuesday or something wouldn't be a bad idea but even the big ones like the one in Elmira I notice have lacked vendors this year so I don't know how many they would get.

If marketed that will be interesting to see how that goes. Last go around it felt like nothing was marketed except at the introductory press conference the Jon Lovitz show was name dropped. To be honest I can't even recall I'd that show actually even occurred.

It never happened. I routinely joked I was going to stand outside the arena holding a "Wheres Jon Lovitz?" sign

And can someone do a welfare check on Mike Tadross?  One of the big selling points of this deal was that he was the" Hollywood producer" who was going to bring entertainment in......but he mysteriously disappeared by the time teh IDA finalized teh lease with Donner.

Never forget when they said they were gonna bring in Jon Lovitz. No lie I was going to start standing out the arena with a poster that said Where's Jon Lovitz?

I absolutely couldn't agree more and that would be both a great first step as well as a refreshing change of pace when it comes to the Arena.

But what kind of events would everyone like to see there, that would generate the revenue that place should be?

You don't always need to swing for the fences just getting even a one hit wonder band in would probably sell. Even though "The L" is sketchy with how they run as a business, they still get some impressive acts and always have something going on.

I recall a comic con that Jared from the comic shop had there, and it was a great one. Lots of people in attendance, lots of vendors, etc. It was a great time.

Maybe work with local groups and hold festivals indoors. An indoor Italian Festival, Irish Festival, etc.

This is a fantastic idea. I love the idea of more community orientated events.

what can they do to make it a successful endeavor going forward?

Well I think the best thing the IDA and the county can do is just be honest with the people. Be upfront, be accountable, and just tell us what's going on. The people should know what's going on if their tax dollars are going toward operating the place.

  12. The Mammoth Fan Page saying that Donner moved out. I went by the arena today and noticed there was no lights on the outside advertisement and everything was taken out of the shop.

  13. While Donner reeks of con artist, the problem here is that the county is also terrible. It's crap vs crap.

While the FPHL hockey is not my personal type of hockey, it did have a following. It doesn't cost as much to run a team in that league and I think could survive here but Robbie is the only one who be willing to come back and we all know the county isn't doing that. I honestly don't know who could come in and save this arena.
