Surely I can't be the only one who sees Russia taking a play out of our own 80's Cold War playbook where they're just spending us into oblivion like we did them?

That is exactly what is happening. At this point if they can't do it themselves they should surrender. The world (US) cannot fund this forever!

  2. As you may or may not have heard Wheelock Rides closed their doors over the weekend. Why does that matter? That happens to be the same company that has been contracted to provide rides for the 182nd Chemung County Fair.

We have already reached out to different companies including a well known one in the area. Once a new one has been found and a contract signed I will let you know.

This will not stop the demolition derby, truck and tractor pulls from still going as planned. The contract for the concert has also been signed already so The Oak Ridge Boys farewell tour will also go on as planned.

Admission fees will be reduced to $2.00.  I don’t remember what was said about those under 16.  Definitely a step in the right direction.  Too bad the space for vendors under the grandstand wasn’t rebuilt.

Sorry for the late reply. The space under the grandstands is still there. It was rebuilt when the grandstands were rebuilt. The food vendor spots behind the bleachers that burned down was not rebuilt. Code and health dept would not allow them for various reasons.

There wasn’t any specific mention of the Building that was proposed with ARP funds approved...

I can say there has been no discussion of rebuilding the old secretary's building at any of the Ag. Society's meetings. We are booked with getting things ready for the fair. The front page of the fairs website has a bubble map that's shows where everything is going to be. It will take a few years to get it where we want it, but this year is a giant leap.

he would like to see more on the ground, community-based activity. That is, more foot patrols; more face-to-face interaction. Less confrontation.

I agree it would be nice to see the police walking the beat so to speak. Also doing things to engage kids and the public. The trading cards they did in the laste 80's early 90's was great. The kids interacted with every officer they saw trying to collect the whole set.

Most SROs in the school do a good job of interacting with kids, but seeing a cop walk your neighborhood and knowing him is a different type of relationship.

  6. I can't say I have ever had a negative interaction with a LEO. Even when I was pulled over for a traffic infraction, they were polite and to the point. I was even handcuffed and patted down in front of McDonald's on N Main St and placed in the back of the car and the officer was never negative.

Yes, some officers are jerks and over the last 20+ years they seem to be more and more. Of course the become jaded. What other job do people have where they are hated because of what officers in other states have done.

I'm interested in hearing the rest of story on the incident with your daughter. Because I doubt she was just walking down the street 5 minutes after curfew and was stopped.

    Are lifeguards necessary?

I mean unless you want kids drowning, I would say they are. And no insurance company will cover the pool without life guards on duty.

  8. Anyone that thinks the pool is salvageable at this point is holding onto sentiment of childhood.

The pool mechanical room is probably filled with asbestos and you could probably tear it down and build it again cheaper than restoring what is there now. I saw there was a kid during summer cohesion.

Say I had 5 million to have a new one rebuilt to the exact same look as the original, what's next?

I read an article not long ago that the W. Elmira and Harris Hill pools are having issues finding life guards because kids are not taking the life guard courses as much as they used to.

Working splash pads are great because once they are installed they are mostly maintenance free and allows the neighborhood kids to cool off and not have to worry about finding life guards.

Yes there are some that are returning to the board and there are some who left in previous years that are returning but there is still room for more. With anything, it’s always the same people on these boards so getting some fresh faces and ideas would be very valuable.
I have sat and listened to some of the ideas being batted around for 2024 and it’s encouraging IF it can happen and if we can get the community excited about the fair again.
Those that have stepped up so far are willing to listen and communicate in ways the previous board did not. The fair year starts now with planning. So much goes into it from dealing with contracts and budget. The previous board did not have a written budget or plan. The current members want to get processes documented and a solid budget in place to present to the county so they can start booking the big attractions.
Even if someone is not interested in being on the board, sitting in on a meeting now and then would be informative and helpful for getting accurate information out to the community.

I will add it to my calendar. I think it would be interesting to be on the fair board.

September 19th 6:30pm at Ag Society office at fairgrounds there will be the annual meeting of Ag Society to bring on new board members to begin planning for 2024 fair. They are looking for 4-7 new members. Show up if interested in being part of bringing the fair back to something to be proud of.

I was under the impression they already had enough people ready to take over. That's something I may look into if it's not the case.

    For real.

Before things on here STB, I believe it was explained that anyone can carry petitions for a candidate in their party ( please correct me if I'm wrong. ) My question is, at least the one I can remember right now, is, why go through the trouble to carry a petition, get, I believe it was 20 pages of signatures, and then not turn them in?!? Is it malicious intent to stymie a candidate deemed "unfit" ( not conservative enough, not "Christian" enough, whatever stupid reason ) or a simple case of gross incompetence?

I can't say for sure, but I also cannot fathom a county legislator on his fourth term thinking that it's perfectly acceptable to just throw them away.

It's usually 20 signatures per page, not 20 pages. And I have idea why they would get them and then toss them. If I don't like the candidate I just get them signatures.

  12. It's supposed to be colder tonight. Mine looks like the survived last night, but I covered them in a nice black plastic for tonight. Hopefully they collect a lot of heat today and survive the night. Luckily I only have about a dozen plants in and the rest are waiting till this weekend or next.

Agreed, running a farce campaign to mock the system, while calling yourself Libertarian is a disservice to the Libertarian Party.....particularly when they are fighting to be recognized again in NYS, after the State Board of Elections raised the threshold for automatic ballot access (from 50,000 votes to 130,000 votes) in 2020.

Prince Andrew did that to get rid of another party that didn't endorse him, but his primary challenger.
