  1. Because the generic shows intention. Jim wants to give Elmirans a sense of pride in their city. He wants to make the city a "drive-to" not a "drive-through". To achieve that, he will initiate a new long term plan for the city; one which focuses on the well-being of the whole population, and not just on economic growth.
  2. Possibly because what you don't know has a better chance. If the City has gone through a 60=year slump, isn't it time to try something different?
  3. Same reason they chose the incumbent: not more of the same. Well, I don't know.... Maybe try something different? Have the past 8 years been great for the city? (Covid stimulus money aside). If you think they have been great, by all means vote for the deadly boring incumbent. If not, vote for change.
  4. I do not have magic access to the "numbers". They are readily available, as I have posted three times so far. In rough third: Democrats, Republicans, independents.
  5. What could you possibly get behind? What does Mandell have to offer?
  6. Just what would you like to hear? Residents tend to come up with the same list of issues - streets, crime, drugs, lack of jobs etc. Talking points are not the problem. Voting is. Nowadays, we are ruled by the voice of about 30% of the population.
  7. The concerns of the people are well-known and very generic. Answers tend to be the same.
  8. I have done several times now. Roughly speaking the demographics are 30% unafilliated, 32% republican and 35% Dems. I can't find your post saying that candidates should anticipate what the questions for a debate are going to be. Perhaps so, but the moderator selects the questions that come in, and that can skew the conversation. Out of curiosity, have you participated in many debates?
  9. There are enough Dems and blanks to win without anyone changing party lines (not likely to happen, except in a very few cases).
  10. If you think that Jim is only offering the same as the current Mayor, you were not listening. A debate is a very limited forum, with little opportunity to introduce new topics. The candidates are at the mercy of the moderator. I suspect that you have not explored his website which offers insight to many different topics
  11. Yes I can. And I have done so in another post to KarenK (I think) But here they are again, from the Board of Elections: democrats 5067; republicans 3564. Plus others.
  12. I have to disagree. I think Jim has a very good chance of winning this election. His ideas about creating community, revitalizing the downtown and depressed areas throughout the city; taking on slumlords to improve the housing market, housing the homeless, and many other issues have really resonated with the more than 3000 people with whom he has had contact, so far. Debates, remember, are very much like a trial - you get to answer the questions put to you by the prosecution, and that's it. The League of Women Voters is holding a candidates' forum on October 26th
  13. This is definitely a problem. I think that - apart from lethargy - many Democrats have not bothered to vote because they have bought into the idea that this is a RED city and their vote isn't going to make a difference. And that they were not frightfully enthusiastic about the candidates. Hopefully that is changing. There are good candidates running for Council this year.
  14. I do have those numbers. There are only just over 13,000 registered voters in Elmira, and the largest group among those is Democrats - 5067, as of April this year. Then there are 4330 blanks (or unaffiliated). They can vote either way. 3564 Republicans and 200 Conservatives. I would say that the numbers are very favourable, and that you need to revise your view that there is a conservative majority - of voters. The people who matter.
  15. I don't know what you want. Anyone happy with the current administration will not vote for Jim. That is obvious. But if you feel that life in Elmira could improve for most of its residents, then you should, perhaps, vote for someone new. Talk to him. Share with him your ideas for improvements.
  16. How many flakes from Ithaca do you know? And what is wrong with being "an eccentric, or unconventional person"? The dictionary definition also includes unreliable. However, that is not applicable. If Jim says he will do something, he will. I think - if you look at the numbers - that he has much more than a snowball's chance of winning.

  18. You seem to be implying that I should just fix typos before posting. I do, quite often. My problem was when I only caught the typo after posting.
  19. To Hal. I do use my laptop, But I assure you that there was no edit button anywhere that I could see. Chris has fixed the problem.
  20. And which topic would that be? I thought we were talking about the best candidate for Mayor of Elmira. A topic which I have addressed many times. BTW, Karen said that one can always choose the edit button. Unfortunately that option does not appear for me.
  21. Reply to KarenK. I use my laptop exclusively for this kind of interaction. And I promise you there is no edit button.
  22. No, Adam, I am not trying to get a rise out of people. As I said, I am not a very good typist and I sometimes make mistakes, which I recognize and would like to correct. If I could see a way to do so. Mr. Hassell certainly does have ideas, but as I said before, it is difficult to form a "substantive" plan without input from the City, the Council and the public. That will be his first action.
  23. AND. Do we have an accounting of where the rest of the money is. "Some of the biggest amounts include $2,296,442.59 to repair the clock tower at City Hall. So far, the City has spent only $7,094.61." What are they going to do with the remaining $2,2889,000 odd? Does clock tower work have to spear over several years? What has happened to that money?
  24. To me, this says that an overhaul of committee appointments is called for. Why not ask Lawanna Morse (13th district) who she would like to see as the Legislative representative for the farmers of Chemung County? She is a farmer and presides over a mostly rural district.
  25. Again I don't know how to edit posts. There should be a "have" between they and written
