For many years, Mark Twain wrote and lived in the area, with the county gaining a reputation as the author's home state. The county had a total population of 84,148 as of the 2020 census and is part of the Elmira-Corning, NY Combined Statistical Area. "Chemung" is the name of a Delaware Indian village, meaning "big horn." Formed in 1836 in the Finger Lakes Region, the county is also known as the "Gateway to the Finger Lakes" and is also part of New York's Southern Tier.
