There’s something about a cold brew that helps close out a hard day’s work. Beer in the United States has come a long way in the last 40 years. When I was a young man in the 1970s, I remember seeing generic beer on the shelf. At that point, it was just a commodity — a pale, fizzy beverage indistinguishable from others like it except for the labels.

These days, the beer aisle is overflowing with styles of beer from all different types of brewing traditions: British ales, German lagers, strong Belgian beers, and more. Brewers in the United States are giving their own twist to classic styles from around the world. American-style IPAs (all the rage right now) are descended from the English India pale ales, for example. This beer renaissance has been driven in part by homebrewers — and you, too, can brew beer at home that has the qualities you desire.

    Assemble a Starter Kit

The most common batch size for homebrewers is 5 gallons, which makes just over 48 standard 12-ounce bottles. You can easily brew beer at this scale in your kitchen with a minimal amount of equipment. Homebrew shops sell kits that include everything you’ll need to get started, except for a large brew pot and empty beer bottles. The price of starter kits is generally between 70 dollars and 200 dollars, depending on what the kit includes. Starter kits that include kegging equipment are typically more expensive.

The main items in a brewing starter kit include a food-grade plastic bucket or glass carboy in which to ferment the beer; a second bucket to hold the beer before bottling; tubing to move the liquid from vessel to vessel; and a bottle capper.

For beginning brewers, a 5-gallon stainless steel pot will work well as a brew kettle. At a minimum, you’ll need a pot that will hold 3 gallons of boiling liquid with at least 1 gallon of extra space for foaming.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Space weather forecasters have issued a geomagnetic storm watch through Monday, saying an ouburst of plasma from a solar flare could interfere with radio transmissions on Earth. It could also make for great aurora viewing.

There’s no reason for the public to be concerned, according to the alert issued Saturday by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

The storm could interrupt high-frequency radio transmissions, such as by aircraft trying to communicate with distant traffic control towers. Most commercial aircraft can use satellite transmission as backup, said Jonathan Lash, a forecaster at the center.

Town Meeting is a tradition that, in Vermont, dates back more than 250 years, to before the founding of the republic. But it is under threat. Many people feel they no longer have the time or ability to attend such meetings. Last year, residents of neighboring Morristown voted to switch to a secret ballot system, ending their town meeting tradition.

Not so in Elmore, population 886. Its residents are used to holding tight to traditions. They’ve fought to keep open their post office, their store and their school, the last one-room schoolhouse in the state. Last fall, Elmore residents voted 2-1 in favor of keeping their town meetings.

And so it is at 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday in March, when, atop an elevated stage, moderator Jon Gailmor stands up.

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to democracy,” he says. “This is the real thing, and we should all be proud that we’re doing this.”

  6. On Thursday at approximately 5:18 pm the Elmira Police Department responded to the Empower Federal Credit Union at 351 North Main St. for the report of a male who had been verbally abusive and aggressive toward Credit Union employees making them feel threatened. The male refused to leave the property after being asked to do so by employees.

Upon officer’s arrival they made contact and spoke to the male who was uncooperative but after a short time began driving away. Upon doing this the male began yelling obscenities out of his vehicle at officers, threw an item out of his vehicle and was observed not wearing a seat belt and also using a cellphone while driving.

Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop of the male to address the littering and vehicle and traffic law violations at which time the male refused to stop for the officers and continued northbound on North Main St. Due to past interactions with the male, officers were aware of his residence and believed that he was traveling there to which the officers followed him to the residence.

Upon arrival to this residence the male stopped his vehicle and pulled over to the side of the road. Officers approached the vehicle and gave orders for the male to exit the vehicle, to which he refused. Officers then utilized a police baton to break one of the vehicle’s windows and forcibly remove the male from the vehicle taking him into custody for criminal charges.

Due to the results of the investigation the Elmira Police Department charged 45 year old Benjamin J. Luisi  of Elmira with 1 count of Resisting Arrest, a    Class A Misdemeanor, 1 count of Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, 1 count of Trespass, a violation, 1

A vacant mixed-use building collapsed in Elmira on S. Main Street earlier this month.

The two-story building was in-between three open businesses: Anne’s Pancakes, MarShell’s restaurant and Georould’s Pharmacy Center and one other vacant, mixed-use building. Anne’s Pancakes, a neighborhood favorite, was separated from the crumbling property by a narrow alleyway.

Although it had to close down for a day, Elmira Mayor Dan Mandell said the people who were at Anne’s Pancakes when the building fell were safe. Marcus Page of MarShell’s restaurant said nobody was in their business during the collapse because they are a dinner-only eatery, however they lost a day’s worth of business.

Mandell explained there are similar vacant properties in the city that often go through several owners who purchase them at auction and are left unattended.

“They'll purchase them and then they'll find out what they bought,” said Mandell. “And [you know,] a lot of times we have to go in and code gets a hold of them, cites them and at some point they realize they bought a dead horse and it goes back onto the auction again. They foreclose on the property and the county picks it up and it's sold back on the auction.”

NFL executive vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent, told reporters on Thursday that the league won't pursue any proposals to ban the "tush push" quarterback sneak popularized by Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

One of the concerns around the play was whether it offered an unfair advantage, though that was contradicted by the fact that it wasn't a universally successful maneuver and only certain teams (the Eagles) seemed to master it.

"The Eagles," Vincent acknowledged, "do it well."

The Eagles converted an incredible 37-of-40 quarterback sneaks last year, a 92.5 percent conversion rate. That success rate largely came down to the lower body strength of Hurts and a stout offensive line, led by former center Jason Kelce, a master of leverage.

  11. Several local and state agencies, as well as other businesses, have announced plans for the upcoming solar eclipse that will take place on April 8th.

This will be a total eclipse, something that only occurs in the same place once every 400 years and New York state will be directly in the path of it.

    Screen Shot 2024-03-22 at 11.35.05 AM.png

New York State Police Troop E out of Canandaguia will be that agencies outpost for this event. State police will provide a comprehensive and uniform presence, ensuring the safety of both visitors and residents as they experience and travel home from the eclipse. Members of the State Police will implement security measures appropriate for large gatherings and take all necessary actions to maintain order and smooth traffic flow.

"Building on past experiences, the planning process for this event has been proactive, aiming to address potential impacts within Troop E. Our goal is to minimize any adverse effects associated with the large influx of visitors to the local area. This approach is based on the lessons learned from the 2017 solar eclipse, where some regions experienced a 100 percent increase in their population in the days leading up to and during the eclipse."

Area schools have also announced plans to release students early througout Chemung County. The approximate time when the sun is expected to be completely blocked out will coincide with the time when schools would normally dismiss students. School officials say that dismissing students early will not only allow them to watch the eclipse with their families ( using safety glasses the district will provide ) but also ensure the safety of students, particularly those who walk to and from school, when it's dark.

In Chemung County, officials have been meeting to prepare for any challenges that the eclipse may present to the area such as a sudden influx of travelers from out of the area.

"We've been told the hotels in those areas are packed. So what we're looking for in this area is there might be some overflow or people traveling to those areas to get the best view of the eclipse," Chemung County Executive Christopher Moss recently told WENY News

In addition, Wegmans has announced that they will be closing 48 stores across New York State for a half hour during the eclipse. Stores and all services, including the pharmacy and Meals2Go pickup, will be closed from 3:00 until 3:30pm on April 8th so employees will have an opportunity to witness this rare event.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu railed Sunday against growing criticism from top ally the United States against his leadership amid the devastating war with Hamas, describing calls for a new election as “wholly inappropriate.”

In recent days, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish official in the country and a strong Israel supporter, called on Israel to hold a new election, saying Netanyahu had “lost his way.” President Joe Biden expressed supportfor Schumer’s “good speech,” and earlier accused Netanyahu of hurting Israel because of the huge civilian death toll in Gaza.

Netanyahu told Fox News that Israel never would have called for a new U.S. election after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, and denounced Schumer’s comments as inappropriate.

As part of a $45 million plan to combat retail theft, Gov. Kathy Hochul wants to stiffen penalties against retail theft and anyone who assaults a store employee.

But Democrats in the State Legislature are pushing back.

She highlighted the proposals at a news conference this week at the State Capitol, saying shoplifting incidents involving physical force have more than doubled. She appeared with grocery store and other shop owners, who back her efforts.

“These individuals are very exposed, especially in a small shop with just one worker. They don't have any way to protect themselves. They're literally on the front line,” Hochul said. “And under this law, assaulting a retail worker would carry the same elevated penalties that we have in place for assaulting a first responder.”

She wants to make the crime a Class D felony.

Hochul put the proposals in her state budget plan, where governors have the most leverage to get policy issues passed.

The governor also wants to empower the State Police to investigate and prosecute interstate and even international retail theft rings. She’s set aside $25 million and is directing 100 more troopers to be hired.

Hochul spoke as the state Senate and Assembly were releasing their budget plans. Neither included the additional penalties in their plans.

Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris said the Senate wants to look at other ways to fight retail theft, including targeting repeat offenders.
