"Living In Chemung County, You Need To Know..."

Recommended Posts

Sometimes newcomers to the area have a hard time adjusting to life here in the area. Let's help them out.

With anything humorous, snarky, or yes, even helpful, finish this sentence:

"Living in Chemung County, you need to know..."

that you should always look both ways before driving into any intersection, no matter what color the light is.

You should know defensive driving, and use it daily.

Amen. That light turns green, wait. More often than not, someone is running that red light.

You should know that in the City of Elmira especially, bicyclists and people on those motorized scooters aren't aware of traffic laws. Of any kind. They will ride on sidewalks, the wrong way on one way streets, dodge in and out of traffic and expect you, in that hunk of metal weighing a ton or two, to yield to them.

Yesterday I saw a guy riding the wrong way on North Main St. blast into and intersection and nearly get hit. Good thing for him the driver spiked the brakes and the cyclist managed to turn just enough to avoid being hit. Of course he just kept going on his way, the wrong way, down the street.

You should also know to assume that a majority of people don’t know how to navigate a traffic circle correctly. Because they don’t.

As for Hanover Square? Go with God my friend.

When we go to Nick's we love to sit in that front window if we can just to watch traffic go through Hanover Sq.  5-6 near misses every single time.

They don't need a traffic study, they need to eat lunch in the front window of Nicks.  I can tell you that the stop sign on the Nicks side is useless.  It sits back so far that 1/2 the people that go through there don't even see it unless they are local and know it's there.

Hanover Square is, IMHO, the only place that could benefit from having a roundabout. That is, if people knew how to use them. 😞

Why is there no stop sign on South Main street?

...that downtown Weis market can have very unique (some'd call it "fancy") food that's 50% off; people who live nearby won't buy it, but the store it it since Weis is an equivalent of Wegmans in many places in PA (Wellsboro, for instance). So, if you are looking for some very good Stilton, you may find it there. Sure, it might be near its expiration date, but we are talking about a moldy cheese, people.

don’t have any problem with it. But someone from out of the area? They’re gonna have some difficulty.

That though it's one county, there will be different road conditions in any given area in winter.

I recall even an LEO commenting about how the roads were perfectly clear until he got to the intersection of Jerusalem Hill Road and Greatsinger Road. Once you enter that area where sunlight rarely gets to the pavement, you're in for a surprise. And even then, here in the "Icebox of Chemung County", we'll have perhaps the coldest temperatures but less snow than they'll have up in Erin.

So asking "How are the roads?" is a loaded question. The person in Elmira is going to give you a wholly different answer than someone in another part of the county.

And while we're on that topic, though i suppose it could go for anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon Line... It's winter. It's snowing. The roads may be bad. They'll get them clear sooner or later. Get over it.

That question drives me crazy.  There's a gal that posts that question on the Erin page every single time we have so much as a dusting.  It's winter, leave early and drive with caution.  If you have to go to work you have to go to work.  She's not someone who can WFH.

Some streets have NO street lights...As a city girl moving to Elmira that was my biggest surprise...and if you live in the country, it is not as peaceful as you're dreaming.  Frogs, owls and coyotes also make noise.

I find the frogs, owls and coyotes to be very peaceful.  Throw in the fox and occasional fisher cat screaming.  I love listening to the night sounds outside.

LOL I couldn’t help but laugh at @Beekeeper’s comment because the things she could sleep through as a city person would have me up all night here in the country.

The nature noises are music at nighttime. It’s the loud exhausts, booming bass stereos and squealing tires that are the real noise.

It took me 5 years before I could sleep soundly in the country...My children and husband never could sleep at my parents' house when we went to Pittsburgh for a visit.
