Straw Bale Gardening

Recommended Posts

The only caveat I would add to this is to be careful not to add so much straw to your compost pile it packs together and doesn't break down. I've experienced this. You'll have to stir and water it often, as well as add ample amounts of greens like grass clippings.

I am taking a year off from this because the location I put it will be under construction this year. But I will be back next year.

One thing I did learn last year is once the bale's are wet it doesn't take much water to keep them wet.

It is a great method if you want to do it. I also have a bunch of mulch from last year's bale to cover up the base of  this year's plant with.
