Twin Tiers Memories

Recommended Posts

Growing up and living in this area, a lot of us have fond memories of people, places, and activities that we still remember and reminisce about from time to time.

What are some of your favorite memories of growing up here in the Twin Tiers? Or if you're newer to the area, what's something you remember that made you think, "Oh yeah, this is home"?

I often think about getting haircuts at Doug May’s shop there on Lake Street at Pigeon Point. He was a nice guy, and always had Archie comic books to read while waiting my turn. I believe he also would give me a DumDum lollipop after each haircut.

There weren’t a lot of trips to town but I would have to say . Christmas time Downtown Elmira with all the lights decorating the store fronts and trees in the parks . We would each get $2.00 to shop for siblings and parents at the five and dimes . As you can guess , a 6 year old back in 1959 would think themselves sitting pretty with all that money in your pocket lol . And those huge , it seemed , stores and the crowded street with everyone wishing total strangers a Merry Christmas . Yeah , I’m sure glad I was a kid in those times !

I was thinking of another one this morning, and it's rather timely since Labor Day is in a few days.

The Jerry Lewis Telethon on WENY was like the harbinger of autumn, much like Santa showing up in the parades the day after Thanksgiving for Christmas. Now, I know it was on all over the world, but then you had Steve Christy and the other guys on the local feed as well.

When we were kids and only had two channels, it kind of drove me nuts. But looking back now, I wish it was still on.

I was driving down Davis Street the other day and passed the old St. Casimer's school, where I went for K-5. I rememeber those big, beautiful pines that lined the sidewalk, leading up to the front entrance on Davis. I can almost see us out there, lined up in our littie uniforms and waiting to go in.

On a side note, I was in there maybe 10-12 years ago for a Holy Family school function and I couldn't help but have a look around. And you know, the place was exactly as I remembered it, 40 or so years later.Like, I knew exactly where everything was and where what classes were, etc.  I wish I had a smartphone then, I'd have taken pictures.

Closer to home, I was thinking the other day about how the road we grew up in was once lined with all of those maple trees. I have a VHS copy of the town centennial parade back in ‘56 and they’re all there.

I should have that converted to digital.
