Former Syracuse football star Tommy DeVito will be the starting quarterback for the New York Giants again.

ESPN and the New York Post report QB Daniel Jones is being benched after leading the Giants to a 2-8 start this season. DeVito, the third-string quarterback behind Jones and Drew Lock, is expected to start Sunday when the Giants host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

DeVito, who played college football for Syracuse and Illinois, went 3-3 as QB last year when Jones was injured and became a fan favorite with the nickname “Tommy Cutlets.” The hometown hero has not appeared in any games this season but completed 114 of 178 passes for 1,101 yards and 8 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions in 2023.

Jones, who signed a $160 million four-year deal in 2022, might not ever start for New York again.

The National Football League has been cracking down on celebrations that may look like guns – but Patrick Mahomes apparently missed the memo.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was one of the latest to use his arms in the fashion to celebrate a touchdown, and it affected his wallet.

The NFL Network reports that Mahomes was fined over $14,000 for what the league is calling a "violent gesture."

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Eberflus was fired by the Chicago Bears on Friday, one day after botching a timeout in a loss to Detroit.

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will serve as interim coach, the Bears said in a statement.

“This morning ... we informed Matt of our decision to move in a different direction with the leadership of our football team and the head coaching position,” Bears General Manager Ryan Poles said. “I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our organization. We extend our gratitude for his commitment to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”

That was a boneheaded decision at the end of that game. And then to double down on it by saying he felt it was the right move?!?

It's been a bad year for a couple of coaches already. Brian Daboll better figure something out quick or he's next.

The Jaguars' QB Trevor Lawrence took a nasty shot on Sunday:

Quote

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was ruled out of Sunday's 23-20 lossdue to a concussion after sustaining an illegal hit in the first half against the Houston Texans.

Lawrence was hit in the head by Texans defender Azeez Al-Shaair while sliding following a 6-yard run. Lawrence was noticeably shaken up on the play and a skirmish took place after multiple Jaguars players took issue with Al-Shaair's hit, for which he was ejected.

Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones was also ejected for his role in the ensuing fight, while Jacksonville tight end Evan Engram received a 15-yard flag for unnecessary roughness.

Lawrence left the field on a golf cart and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game. Lawrence was 4 of 10 for 41 yards with an interception at the time of his injury.

"It's a play that has no business in our league," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said after the game, per 1010 XL Radio.

You can see the hit on YouTube, unfortunately the NFL doesn't allow embeds of their videos.

Saturday welcomed the top seeds in the NFL playoffs to their first action this postseason, but hosting duties panned out very differently for the two teams.

The shortage of drama from the wild-card round seemed to extend to the opening of the divisional action when the Kansas City Chiefs separated from the Houston Texans for a 23-14 win. But the Washington Commanders threw the NFC for a loop when they upset the top-seeded Detroit Lions 45-31 and pushed their way into their first conference title game since the 1991 season.

With two more matchups looming Sunday, here's a look at the biggest winners and losers from Saturday's action:

I cannot believe Washington beat Detroit.

But then from what I watched of the game, yeah, they didn't bring their "A-game."

Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson is headed to division rival Chicago Bears to become their new head coach

This will be very interesting, not only to see how he performs but how the Lions make up for his absence. I believe they’ve been training an understudy for him, as well as DC Aaron Glenn, who is also heavily rumored to leave for a HC position with teams such as the NY Jets and the NO Saints.

While people who call themselves Ravens “fans”are calling for his head, here’s some perspective:

I’ve got a lot of respect for Lamar Jackson and the way he handled himself after their loss to Buffalo.

The NFL announced Tuesday that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson will be replacing Josh Allen in the annual All-Star showcase, while New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye will be taking the spot of Lamar Jackson.

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix was reportedly extended an invite, per 9News' Mike Klis, but he opted to address a minor injury matter and expedite his recovery:

Allen previously indicated that a wrist injury might keep him from participating in this year's Pro Bowl.

"I don't know," he told reporters Monday. "I got a little banged-up hand right now—a wrist. So, I got to talk with docs right now and figure it out. But we'll see."

He added that the injury occurred during the AFC Championship Game.

"It's brand new," he said. "It was just right at the goal line. The two-point play before halftime got crunched up a little bit. I was able to finish the game with just some swelling and stuff today."
