Global tech outage live updates: Flights grounded and offices hit as internet users face disruptions

Quote

A widespread technology outage grounded flights, knocked banks offline and media outlets off air on Friday in a massive disruption that affected companies and services around the world and highlighted dependence on software from a handful of providers.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.

What to know:

  • How it started: Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.
  • What is CrowdStrike: The U.S. company provides software to thousands of companies worldwide.
  • So far: CrowdStrike says a fix is on the way, but disruptions have continued and escalated across industries.

And that's why software updates should be pushed out in waves, not all at once

CrowdStrike has been called "ClownStrike" at my place of employment. Others have started referring to it as (much more accurate) "CrowdStroke,"

As an antivirus, it's useless; once the endpoint gets marked as showing questionable activities it needs to be wiped and reloaded. "Moved your mouse? Reformat and reinstall Windows."

I have no idea what, or any, repercussions those @$$h0les will be dealing with, but I really want them to suffer. No, I am far from a kind and understanding person at this point. 10% stock price drop is not enough. Whoever thought that pushing updates to all the endpoints at once was a good idea, and whoever has agreed and signed contracts with CS knowing that was their modus operandi, should lose their jobs. Go under, fuck3rs.

But no, CS is the best thing since sliced bread, at least according to my employer. This whole thing will be mentioned only in passing, if it does at all, six months from now. Crickets... crickets.

The recent global tech outage has had a significant impact, grounding flights and disrupting office work for many. This incident highlights the critical dependence on digital infrastructure in our daily lives. It's a stark reminder of the need for robust cybersecurity measures and contingency plans to minimize disruptions. We must prioritize resilience in our technological systems to prevent future widespread issues.

Funny you’d mention that:

We are simply far too reliant on technology.

Completely.

As interesting as Cryptocurrency is......I'm baffled that there are people who trust that some simple tech glitch won't wipe out the whole concept.

From the electric grid to internet/digital systems and transactions......I tend to evaluate more and more what "analog" backup plans could be useful in SHTF scenarios.
