Brand Park Pool

Have you seen the remnants of the splash pad in Brand Park?  And others.

i did see that as of 6/18 the Brand Park one was "closed for repairs"

I guess if the City/County cannot repair/maintain something as simple as a splash pad, its all the more argument for NOT putting in a pool as well as the need for electing more competent leaders instead of career politicians

wonderful things, splash-pads....

no pool involved, so improbability of drowning no lifeguards needed. Kids still cool off ( less energy involved in maintaining splash pad so win for climate), kids can play together, money saved AND no more unsightly remnants of a pool Winning all around

Don’t forget the risk of slipping and falling in a splash pad.  Law suit waiting to happen.

more competent leaders

I'm with you there.

So they are not actually planning to "put in a splash-pad", as promised. They are going to repair one that is big enough for maybe 10 kids at a time. Big deal.

im wondering if that change was due to the delay in demolition of the pool because the latest round of trying to rehab it?

Wonder the same.  My understanding was that they were building a big new splash pad.

There is actually no connection.  The city's position has been, we are going to demolish the pool and install a splash pad instead. To replace a pool, the splash pad needs to be large and appealing. The one undergoing "repairs" is about 10ft by 4. Possibly a little larger, but not much. A bit like saying, I'll throw out your three course dinner and give you a bowl of jello instead. Shameful.

But how is the County supposed to save 30% more water if they keep building all these splash pads around town?

Don’t build splash pads.

Ask yourself this , before the pool and splash pads how did families cool off ? Heres a hint it flows through the whole valley and saves the City 100% of the water bill . Another hint , there are smaller tributaries throughout the area that are absolutely free to use . Lifeguards … phttt , how the hell did we survive swimming without them ? Oh thats right , our parents acted as our lifeguards . And splash pads were called , wait for it … a garden hose , what a concept eh !?

I feel like the Horseheads community raised concerns back in the 40s or 50s after a few instances where unsupervised children playing in local ponds/waterways resulted in tragedies.

Local business leaders and organizations raised funds to build the Thorne Street pool as a place for kids to play and cool off safely.

And now, a few generations later.....parents are screaming that the fees (which I think are pretty reasonable) are too high.  There's a good chance that Elmira residents would also balk at the $3-5 daily fees.

More than likely yes as they were unsupervised , meaning maybe the parents were not there or paying close attention.
That probably would hold true today as well only more so because kids are just spit out and left to be someone else’s responsibility.
But , in this area the river is to be feared not enjoyed as a natural resource , the same goes for Seeley Creek and other such waterways . Imagine if the Finger Lakes were not utilized , especially at private cottages … who is the Lifeguard at each of these ? Yes I understand the difference and liabilities involved on public property. But back to topic , residents want splash pads but they bitch about paying for their use . Well then let them get off their collective asses and either get trained as lifeguards or take their kids to the river or creeks ! Stop putting the responsibility on the taxpayers, we didn’t force them to crank out the kids,  that was their choice . Or the bottom line … get out the garden hose and spray them down .

Size and appeal does not matter as long as the desired result is achieved!

The city can probably put in 50 or more splash pads for what 1 pool costs .

By all means build them , but keep them the Hell away from either bank of the river !! There are plenty other spaces that are more pleasant . The City Leadership just needs to be more forward thinking !

Again placing more splash pads is not going to save you on your water and sewer bill it actually going to go up Chemung county is proposing they want to save 30% more water how can they do that they keep adding splash packs at this point just start building roundabouts.

If you are interested in Brand Park Pool, please attend the meeting of the Elmira City Council tomorrow night at 5:30. Several people will be speaking about the pool. It may be our last opportunity to save it. Please support this effort.

Merged with the already existing thread.

And I’m sorry Jim, but the time for saving that pool passed a long time ago. It’s time to tear it down.

That ship has sailed.  Has the county backing, the state backing and the city backing.
