Concert Planned To Commemorate "Summer Jam" 50th Anniversary, But Not In Watkins Glen

A new concert site in Central New York is set to make its grand opening this summer with a 50th anniversary celebration of Summer Jam, one of the largest concerts in U.S. history.

“Summer Jam 50″ will take place July 28-29 at Wonderland Forest, a brand-new 500-acre venue in LaFayette, N.Y. The nature-focused location, located 15 miles south of Syracuse, features rolling hills and a variety of camping options.

The two-day concert will pay tribute to Summer Jam, which featured the Allman Brothers Band, the Grateful Dead and The Band at Watkins Glen on July 28, 1973. An estimated 600,000 people attended; approximately 150,000 tickets were sold, but an additional 450,000 fans were admitted for free after overwhelming the small Finger Lakes site and creating a miles-long traffic jam. (By comparison, the original 1969 Woodstockfestival drew more than 400,000 people to Bethel.)
