The owner was told he'd have to follow the historic building restoration laws, which are significantly more costly.

To compare; when all the windows in one of our houses had to be replaced after years of neglect (complicated story), we were told that because of that house's location we should repair the frames - at that point mostly splinters and rotting wood shards - than have them replaced. It was not easy to convince The Mighty Code otherwise.

That's another example of how NYS expresses its love for you.  I am sure that if we had more government oversight, this church would have been rehabbed long time ago, tho.

What do the FB devotees think the City of Elmira should do? It’s a privately owned church. It’s already tax exempt, and diverting taxpayer funds to a religious institution would be inappropriate.

Since it's no longer an active church it should be back on the tax roles. If I remember right that's what happened with the old Ernie Davis school now Finn Academy. Since it was bought by Edger or whoever it went back on the tax roles. When Finn Officially opened it may have been removed.

Not quite sure how to respond to that. Builders of the past built to last, but modern America thinks that 50 years is an adequate life-span. To tear down magnificent buildings is a shame. Yes, change is good, but only if it is for the better. What do you imagine will happen to that space?

I agree, I hate to see historic buildings torn down. But if the owner does not maintain them the city should not be responsible for fixing it.

What drives me nuts is a certain business everyone loves that was destroyed in a flood she tried to rebuild and found contaminated soil so she left the property to reopen down the road. The property reverted back to the county who paid to have the rest of the building town down and cleaned up before the auctioned off the property at a low price.

All while the former owners business is more popular than ever and she didn't have to pay anything while getting awards for being a great business person.

He knew that when he bought the building.  It doesn't seem as if he has any interesting restoring it. Probably plans to develop the property into some mall-like venture. Yuck.

I would not worry about it becoming anything but an abatement situation with the City holding the demolition bill !

Not sure if above can provide some insight here....

I am confused about the missing child posts being shared all over fb and by the local news... but nothing put out by the police.

If/when a minor (11 y o in this case)  is missing... wouldn't the police be involved?

What are the criteria for an Amber Alert? Does it not apply for runaways?

🤷‍♀️

Supposedly the police are involved but he is considered a runaway so no Amber alert.  The police are not so quick to put anything out until they have all the info they need whereas the public and the news just run with it.

At this point the kid is probably afraid to go home.  I do know he left with no shoes on so sounds like a temper tantrum that may have gotten out of hand.

I remember that. In fairness to the residents, a good portion of their outrage was manufactured by local politicians. Some Village officials were peeved that the Town didn't include them in the decision (because....duh....it's not in the Village and not up to them).  It was made out to be some "secretive" plan that was kept from voters...blah blah blah.

And....of course, the County Legislator for that location was (and still is) pushing the narrative of it causing "drugs and homeless" problems

Joe Brennan is the reason that I moved to Elmira and ran for County Legislature. Unsuccessfully, I am sad to say.

Looks like skies will be fairly clear for the Perseid Meteor shower

Quote

The next Perseid meteor shower peaks around the night of Aug. 11 and before dawn on Aug.12, 2024, with good viewing conditions for a few days on either side of the peak.

The Perseid meteor shower, commonly known as the Perseids, is visible annually from mid-July to late August. Although the moon will be 50% illuminated during the peak of the Perseids this year, it will set around midnight, providing dark skies until dawn — ideal for meteor watching!

At the Southport Planning Board meeting Tuesday night, plans were presented for a community solar farm.  These panels would be located on the 1300 of Maple Ave, on a plot of private property.

In total, there would be 14.6 acres of solar panels managed by Delaware River Solar.

I would think long and hard about this.  There was a picture of the property on the local news this morning and it looked like farm land.  Can we afford to lose more farm land?

Being that it's private property, it's not really up to anyone else.

The Farm Bureau made that same argument when the solar panels were going up on Ridge Rd. The owner came back with, "It's no longer being farmed, I don't plan to farm it, so it's not like you're 'losing' farm land either way."

What would be the purpose of the farm? Is it to power Southport?

It'll provide some power, but it won't completely power the town.

It depends on the company, I guess.

The Solar company that presented their proposal seeking zoning approval in Catlin last year made a huge pitch that farm land could still be used at solar farms for grazing and certain crops. The panels being elevated enough for agricultural use with the ability to raise the angle for farm equipment to access.

Considering the panels create shade, I was skeptical of how much they’d likely limit possible ag usage. But they had lots of CGI images of what it might look like to have sheep grazing underneath.

The representative couldn’t answer many questions. She focused on her prepared talking points that it’s clean, little chance of their panels causing chemical/ground pollution and they promise to clean up when they decommission.

She also bragged that it’s “community solar” that would make power available to local residents. But the closest she came to offering any specifics was that those who opted in could get some portion of their electric usage at some discounted rate.  She couldn’t say how much the discount might be, just that the 10% a previous company had claimed was an unreasonably high expectation.

Basically, not any real advantage for anyone but the property owner who’s get some undetermined lease payments....in exchange for losing a large chunk of their agricultural property tax exemption.

Last I heard, NYSEG wasn’t willing to run the necessary infrastructure here in Catlin, so the idea has been scrapped as far as I know.
